As a creativity expert who has guided hundreds of people back to their art,
I say: start with Drawing.
It’s one of our first childhood joys.
It’s a fundamental human endeavour and lights up all of your brain!
You are engaging your imagination,
coordination, problem solving and memory.
You may start of a bit sketchy at first, but with some practice,
that happiness you had as a child with a crayon in your hand
will come flooding back.

Art doesn’t have to be serious to be meaningful.

No ones judging or comparing.
But I would like to be there, cheering you on.

Each video Lesson in my classes features a new skill that is designed to build your creative confidence.  As you move through the course from beginning to end, your skills and confidence will grow and you will feel comfortable with the progression. My tutorials are created with high quality video and step by step  instructions. Our tutorials are pretty and easy to understand and follow, even for the newest beginners!All sessions for the Self-guided study classes are LIVE when you arrive and THERE IS NO TIME LIMIT to your access or involvement. This means there’s no waiting for projects to be posted and you can take the course at whatever pace works for you, your class access has no expiry & it will always be here for you

Workshop FAQ’s

How does online learning work?
All you need is an Internet connection! You will access your Jane Davenport course through an online course management system, which integrates discussion forums, videos, text, an inbox for direct communication with your instructor, and more.

Is there a set time when I need to sign in?
No, you never need to be online at a particular time since there are no “live” lectures or sessions. These courses contain hours of video shot in my Byron Bay studio and other wonderful places. You will find other learning resources that you can access at times that are convenient for you.

How do I access my  course?
When you register you will get an immediate  Payment receipt and and an e-mail from me, usually within 24 hours, that includes a link to the School site so you can set yourself up with a username and password. Once you’ve registered and set up a username and password, you can access the School at any time. Once inside the School, you must join your Class. That is approved and you will then have unlimited personal access to the course materials.

If you do not receive an email from Jane Davenport within 48 hours, please check your spam folder first and then e-mail my Studio to let us know if you did not receive this e-mail.

How do I interact with the instructor and fellow students?
The  classes contain discussion forums (some open, some with specific course related assignments and homework), where you can post messages, comments, artwork and questions for Jane and your classmates. Everyone answers at times convenient for him or her, since everything can be accessed 24/7. Nothing in the course is “live,” because our students come from across the globe!

Are there any requirements?
There are no grades and no requirements: participate as much or as little as you like. The minimum age for the School is 13. My current classes are for adults.

Can you tell me more about what I can expect to find when I log in?
Over the course you will have the opportunity to watch videos and read course materials, participate in discussions regarding each week’s material and ask questions.

What if I need technical help?
I have created an excellent Help & Site Guidelines area on the site, and if you can’t find your answer there, you can always ask our Techspert.

Will you be offering more courses in the future?
Yes. I have many plans already for all sorts of fun and art! I have no plans at the moment to repeat the ‘Live’ version of classes that are now open for Self Guided study. But new many students join every single day, so there is always response and fun to be had in the classrooms.

Do I need any special software?
No, just Internet access. All my classes are compatible with both PCs and Macs. In order to participate in all my online classes you are expected to have basic computer and internet skills. You need to be able to browse the internet, know how to download and save a document to your computer’s hard drive, and understand how to open and save email attachments. It is your responsibility to learn these skills before the class begins.

What is an ‘Art Journal’ or ‘Visual Journal’?
It’s a mix of diary, travel memoir, autobiography, art therapist, visual diary, notebook, scrapbook and sketchbook….plus more… It’s a place, YOUR space, to record and work through your life experience in images, words, colours and collage. There are NO RULES, but there is a wonderful and growing community of people around the world who keep an ‘Art Journal‘.

I am an avid Art Journal keeper. I find it meditative and nourishing.
If I have a crappy day, or someone has ‘done me wrong’, I blurt it all out in my journal, turn the page and let it sit there for a bit. And a few days or a weeks later, I then paint over it and create something lovely on top. It cathartic, truly.
So many of my ideas and inspiration come to me while I am with my Journal.
I journal everyday…sometimes a little, sometimes alot. I love making lists of ‘to-do’s’ in my journal, and when I’ve ticked everything off, I turn it in to a ‘Ta-DAH!’ list by painting and drawing all over it….can you tell I LOVE it?!
Do i HAVE to show my drawings and artwork?
No, but your creativity, artistic ability and drawing confidence will improve exponentially if you do…I will be encouraging you to share your work with our group. There is no judgement, just support, helpful feedback and applause.

I’m an avid journaler, will there be new things for me to learn?
Of course! Run your hungry mind over the class description to see all the creative snacks, main courses and desserts on the table! Beginners and experienced creatives alike will find a plethora (love that word) of techniques and inspirations to create meaningful, heart-felt pages that will record your joys, gratitude, doubts, fears, wishes, dreams, ideas…whatever you like.

Can I download the Videos?
I am a veteran of many, many online classes myself, and I can’t tell you the stress and heartache downloading videos seems to cause! Let alone the room they take up on our computers. So I have decided to host my videos on a robust, professional, paid streaming service . An added advantage is I can update them if information changes. They are compatible with all existing technology including ipads and iphones. You need good wifi access to watch the videos.
