Open for self-guided study now!

Supplies Me:

Supplies Me is an online workshop about art supplies with an emphasis on use in visual/art Journals. But the only way to truly understand and unlock the potential of these amazing tools is to use them, so I have designed a program of intensive ( not scary!) drawing lessons to do just that. The emphasis will be on faces and the figure. So as you are experimenting with using your art supplies in different ways, you will also be learning the basic structure of the feminine face and how to shade, colour and render it. I’ll also share my fashion illustration experience and get you drawing the female figure with ease too!

How long is the Class and what will we cover?

I have designed the class to be 8 weeks long, but it is open ended for Self Guided study for the next 12 months to rewatch and keep learning…so you can take your time.

Join in the fun today!

Following an Introductory week where we cover the basics of keeping an Art Journal including gesso and page preparation, Supplies Me has as its beating heart, 6 week-long sessions devoted to a different group of art supplies. Halfway through the Live course I have allowed for a weeks break and assignment Catchup. the classroom is vibrant and full of the energy and beautiful, developing artwork of the 300 plus students who have already arrived in the classroom

1. Introduction Week - Gesso, art journals and welcome!
2. Coloured Pencil week: I am a Colour pencil NUT. I love their ease of use, tidiness, transportability, price, the instant satisfaction they provide and even the way they look quite frankly! These simple sticks are incredibly versatile and it’s time to unlock your pencil’s potential.

  • Brand review looking at the strengths of each.
  • Interesting ways to use coloured pencils, including how to get oil paint and watercolour like effects.
  • Feminine Face Lesson 1: the basics and the joys of drawing with coloured pencils.
  • Body Basics lesson 1: The human back can be a wonderfully expressive form for your journal, and it is simple to draw.
  • Mixed Media Lesson 1: Tieing together all the lessons of the week with artwork emphasising colour pencils.

3. Watercolour week
Transparent, vibrant and unpredictable…the three qualities I love most about watercolours!

  • Come on a tour of the many amazing forms watercolours come in from tubes to pans, pencils, crayons and even in flat sheets!
  • Feminine Face Lesson 1: shading the face with watercolour paint.
  • Body Basics lesson 1: Legs are such handy devices, and wonderful fun to draw!
  • Mixed Media Lesson 1: Tieing together all the lessons of the week with an emphasis on wonderful watercolours.

4. Catchup Week
Take this time to draw, paint and explore! I will be painting in Bali, but still checking in on the class for questions and feedback.

5. Pens and Markers week
I did my fashion illustration training in Paris. It was my first job as an ‘adult’ and pens and markers were my weapon of choice. I have adored them ever since…let me show you a few tricks!

  • Types of markers and brand review looking at the strengths and uses of each.
  • White pens video - yes, they deserve their own video!
  • What single pen was nominated by all the famous artists I interviewed?
  • Feminine Face Lesson 1: Colour rendering and details, details, details!
  • Body Basics lesson 1: Get your arms around this weeks lesson.
  • Mixed Media Lesson 1: Tieing together all the lessons of the week with artwork emphasising pens and markers.

6. Pastels Week
Soft, squishy and tactile…its time to get your hands a little dirty!

  • Types of pastels from oil to pencils, pans, sticks and crayons.
  • Handling pastels for Art Journals.
  • Feminine Face Lesson 1: How to draw a turned face or 3/4 head.
  • Body Basics lesson 1: Torsos - they hold our hearts and major organs…draw them with passion!
  • Mixed Media Lesson 1: Tieing together all the lessons of the week with artwork emphasising pastels.

7. Acrylic Paint Week
There is something magic about paint…it just feels so nice to use. Lets go swimming in it this week!

  • Different Acrylic paint types, my favourites for journaling and why.
  • Feminine Face Lesson 1: 3/4 adding colour and details
  • Body Basics lesson 1: The figure as a whole entity… how to construct the basics easily.
  • Mixed Media Lesson 1: Tieing together all the lessons of the week with artwork emphasising acrylic paints.

8. Finale Week

Supplies Me is ongoing and open for self study. You can revisit the videos (not available for download) as often as you like using your password (keep it somewhere safe). So you have full permission to take your time and create as you want.

What do we do in the Class?

Although the class is Self Guided, I have set this fun schedule as an option for you to follow

  • On Mondays you will find the product reviews video.
  • Tuesdays are for your Feminine Face drawing lesson video with an emphasis on using the highlighted art supplies of the week.
  • Thursday is Body Basics drawing day where we will cover a different area of the body each week with a video lesson.
  • And each Saturday I will be posting a video of an entire Mixed Media artwork that ties the whole week together with a paint-strewn bow! You will see how I mix-it-up with art mediums in a complete artwork or art journal page.

Videos will be typically between 6 and 15 minutes long each. Sometimes I will split an involved lesson over a few short videos. Intense creative nuggets!

You can either check into our private network each day and keep up with the goings on and videos as they happen, or save them up for a concentrated dose. It’s very important to me to give you feedback on your work, so I will insist a little on you uploading your drawings and experiments into our private forums. It may be nerve-wracking the first time you do it, but trust that you and your creative soul will benefit exponentially by being courageous and sharing your work!

I guarantee that our private forum is a safe and loving space full of creative kindred spirits, where you can feel relaxed and free to be your arty self. Fun, fun, fun!

Supplies Me is a self-study program.

So don’t worry if you can’t keep up week-to-week
with the action packed schedule.

I have created this class so you can take all the time you need and let the magic happen! You can revisit, rewatch, recharge and remind yourself of all the art supplies, all the drawing lessons, all the mixed media inspiration whenever you want.

What do I need to do the class?

  • Let me just emphasise that you don’t need all the art supplies in the universe to complete your assignments! You can use whatever art tools you have. You will learn new ways of using what you do have, and be able to pinpoint what you may like to add to your creative life in the future without expensive trial and error.
  • An Art Journal and Liquitex Gesso are the only absolute essentials.
  • A fast computer & high-speed internet service to process & watch the videos will be vital as well as enough technical know-how to navigate the site. If you are regularly able to watch Youtube videos of up to 15 minutes in length w/o interruption you should be just fine. Do please make sure though, since tuition is non-refundable once your password to the class network has been sent.

I so want you to be part of this adventure. Let’s escape the crazy world and refocus energy on the beautiful things in life that are available to us right now. It’s time to reward yourself with creative confidence!

Here is some of the feedback from my online students:

“Jane - How can I thank you? (let me count the ways). This has been such a wonderful class. I have had an absolute ball. I have learned so much.. from you and my fellow students. I totally hoard art supplies but sometimes they lay barely used. You have really got me reaching into that art bag of mine and bringing out pens, pencils and paints like they were new. Can you hear them all squeeling with delight that they have my attention at last and have been freed to strut their stuff?”

“This classroom is such a hub of activity - its impossible to comment on all the posts but I have read most …and visit often to feast my eyes on all the talent you have unleashed in your workshop.”

” May I just say that I am in awe of the way you keep up with everything. This workroom of yours is a such a hive of activity - a bombardment of comments, counter-comments, a downpouring of amazing pieces of art falling like a beautiful rainstorm, a tornado of ideas, suggestions and an erupting volcano of AH-HA moments. And you stand in the midst of it all, take it all in, read every word, never fail to respond, give words of advice and encouragement and keep everything in order by re-directing gems of information to their rightful places so that we may all benefit from the knowledge before it gets buried. You are like a conductor - you take your stand, pick up your baton and orchestrate this whole fantastic, chaotic riot of activity and imagination effortlessly into the most wonderful symphony of harmony and collective creativity.”

” I had never thought I would be able to do draw a face so quickly.”

“OMG I just drew a face. Who are you amazing Jane?!!!”

” I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed your videos and all the wonderful feedback you and the other Happy Drawing students gave me. I have been at a creative impasse lately, and I feel like your videos will help me break that. Even when you are lucky enough to make a living at a something most people only dream about, it’s possible to get in a rut and lose the joy. You and your students are helping me find that joy again. Can’t thank you enough.”

“Your class has been very freeing and has helped me give myself permission to ‘play’ and not be so serious while learning. Thanks so much Jane xx”

“Jane, I knew your videos would be fun, could not expect anything else from you happy girl! You’re an inspiration, so alive and vibrant, so happy and encouraging, THANK YOU!”

FAQ’s

“I’m not an artist, nor do I have an Art Journal, I’m not even sure I am ‘creative’, but I do love collecting art supplies… Can I join in?” Of course! You don’t have to be an artist or even have to know what an ‘Art Journal’ is to get involved. Supplies Me has enough juice for all levels of arty experience. I will be there to hold your hand and give feedback on your work. Yes, there will be some fantastic, creative drawings posted, but with practice you will feel your work is just as wonderful. you have to start somewhere, right? it may as well be now!

All you need is an internet connection, the creative itch, a journal and a pencil! You may WANT to get more supplies, but it will be an informed decision and no more expensive trial and error.

What is an ‘Art Journal’ or ‘Visual Journal’?

It’s a mix of diary, travel memoir, autobiography, art therapist, visual diary, notebook, scrapbook and sketchbook….plus more…
It’s a place, YOUR space, to record and work through your life experience in images, words, colours and collage. There are NO RULES, but there is a wonderful and growing community of people around the world who keep an ‘Art Journal‘.

I am an avid Art Journal keeper. I find it meditative and nourishing.
If I have a crappy day, or someone has ‘done me wrong’, I blurt it all out in my journal, turn the page and let it sit there for a bit. And a few days or a weeks later, I then paint over it and create something lovely on top. It cathartic, truly.
So many of my ideas and inspiration come to me while I am with my Journal.
I journal everyday…sometimes a little, sometimes alot. I love making lists of ‘to-do’s’ in my journal, and when I’ve ticked everything off, I turn it in to a ‘Ta-DAH!’ list by painting and drawing all over it….can you tell I LOVE it?!

“I’ve never done an Online course - what’s involved?

Once you register, you will be sent an invite to Join my Artomology Network by September 7th (Australian time). I will include the password you need and all instructions. Once you are ‘inside’ the Artomology network, you will join the ‘Supplies Me’ Group. And then you can start the Supplies Me adventure. It’s fun!

“Do i HAVE to show my drawings and artwork?”

No, but your creativity, artistic ability and drawing confidence will improve exponentially if you do…I will be encouraging you to share your work with our group. There is no judgement, just support, helpful feedback and encouragement.

“I’m an avid journaler, will there be new things for me to learn?”

Of course! Run your hungry mind over theclass description to see all the creative snacks, main courses and desserts on the table!

Beginners and experienced creatives alike will find a plethora (love that word) of techniques and inspirations to create meaningful, heart-felt pages that will record your joys, gratitude, doubts, fears, wishes, dreams, ideas…whatever you like.

“What Supplies will I need?”
Very Little - a journal and pencil is enough to get you started…but, of course you can add some fantastic art materials to your stash.

If you are in Australia or New Zealand: check out my store www.instituteofcute.com

If you are in the USA, Europe or South America, then cast your eyes over the supply lists I created on Blicks - details below (look for the little red and black box). I worked just so hard on my recommendations!

“Can I download the Videos?”
I am a veteran of many, many online classes myself, and I can’t tell you the stress and heartache downloading videos seems to cause! Let alone the room they take up on our computers. So I have decided to host my videos on a robust, professional, paid service from Vimeo. An added advantage is I can update them if information changes. They will be compatible with all existing technology including ipads and iphones. I can provide the videos on disc for a small additional fee at the end of the Live Supplies Me class. Just contact me to discuss.
