Online Art Class on how to draw fairies and Mermaids with Jane Davenport

Joynal:
Create your own fairies and fairy tale characters.

Live class starts November 12th

Joynal is open for self guided study and you can join right now!
There are  8 ‘Weeks’ of magic, shimmer, whimsy, drawing, painting, creative support and fun. However, as with all my online Workshops, you have 12 months of personal, unlimited access, so you can take your time and rewatch the videos whenever you like.

My entertaining and highly information rich videos guide you step by step to drawing many styles of whimsical figures and faces. You also have full tutor support and get feedback on your artwork from me, as a professional artist. I have mentored thousands of my students to creative confidence.

My aim is to get your art courage flying through inspirational artwork and a supportive, artistic community.

This online class will take your creative skills  forward in great bounding leaps and into the realms of fairyland.

Here is your invitation:

I would love you to join in!

Draw images from the depths of your imagination!

So what is a JOYnal?

I love creating in a sketchbook, or ‘Art Journal’. But in this workshop your journal will become so much more. We will magically conjure our Joynals from altered books, so that ideas can flow, and the temptation to be ‘perfect’ and only create ‘master pieces’ is well and truly avoided.

We will be making a mess, stretching our imagination and letting it fly free! Conjuring up, re-imagining, drawing and painting all sorts of fairytale characters from mysterious fey creatures to cute garden fairies and their cohorts.

Student testemonials :
” I have truly loved this class, Jane!  Well, your classes are the best that I have experienced, and I have enjoyed all three (Supplies Me, I Heart Drawing, and Joynal).  But, I have tried to understand why this is the best for me.  I think part of it is the topic, Fairy Tales:   Fanciful, carefree, my escape from the real world.  Maybe, part is that I have gained some knowledge about art and have more confidence in my ability.  But, I think the heart of it is the topic of this workshop and the whole approach you took to the workshop.  My inner critic was able to take a mini-vacation, and I felt free to play.  I cannot thank you enough for that, for  your wonderful videos and for your awesome feedback about my art.  I can hardly wait for the next class.
 ”
SHERRI FULTS

Amazing artwork form Joynal students Annette Stevenson and Bridie Williams.

“Jane…..this is NOT goodbye….just a small lull until our next online class with you!!!!  This is my third class with you now …   I can see it myself, how much I have grown into my art.  Thanks to you I have heaps more confidence both in drawing (love faces now) and creative expression.   I really love all your classes, videos, explanations, personality, caring attitude and wonderful teaching in ALL things big and small!!!  ”
DANI GILES

As with all my classes, concrete skills lie at the base of each lesson and my skill in bringing out your own style.

l will have you trying new things and excavating your imagination to create juicy, amazing artwork in the form of fairytales.

Some of these skills include:

  • step by step tutorials on how to create Flower Fairies, Fairytale Heroines, Pixies, Elves, Unicorns and Mermaids!
  • Altering old books into a ‘Joynal’.
  • Making your own Story Book!
  • Drawing Fairy wings
  • Creating Shimmer
  • Drawing dresses that flow in the wind
  • Inventing costumes
  • Drawing from a reference to create any mythical beast
  • appropriating and altering existiting photographs
  • Incorporating your existing work into new pieces.
  • Drawing a determined face

Art, like life, doesn’t have to be serious to be meaningful!

Joynal assumes you are creativily confident just as you would be if you have started your ARTventure with me in my other online workshops. For example: Supplies Me teaches not only HOW to use your art supply stash,  but also the basics of drawing faces and figures from your imagination. In Supplies Me you discover your favourite art-supplies to use as your magic wands!  If you really want to magic-dust your wings, my figure-drawing e-course I Heart Drawing, will get your creative confidence soaring. These are not pre-requisites, but are highly recommended!

When you purchase several of my classes at once, you get a lovely, juicy discount too!

But I leave this assessment totally up to you!
If you feel ready to fly with the fairies…

then join in the fun!

If you really want to magic-dust your wings, my figure-drawing e-course, I Heart Drawing,
will get your creative confidence soaring. These are not  pre-requisites, but are highly recommended. On my store site you will see details on purchasing several of my workshops at once and the savings when you do so.

Registration is open now:

Online classes are an investment of your time and energy as well as your money
and you want concrete skills as well as fun and the most creative results!
I pour my energy into my class materials, and am equally available in the classroom.
Assisting your creativity is important to me…it’s the reason I love to teach.

Let’s  flutter off to magical Joynal wonderland!

Workshop FAQ’s

“How does online learning work?

  • All you need is an Internet connection! You will access your Jane Davenport course through an online course management system, which integrates discussion forums, videos, text, an inbox for direct communication with your instructor, and more.

“Is there a set time when I need to sign in?

  • No, you never need to be online at a particular time since there are no “live” lectures or sessions. These courses contain hours of video shot in my Byron Bay studio and other wonderful places. You will find other learning resources that you can access at times that are convenient for you.

How do I access my  course?

  • When you register you will get an immediate Paypal receipt.  Your Welcome e-mail will be sent within 48 hours. It includes detailed instructions to access the School Site and your Classroom.
  • Once you’ve registered, set up a username and password, you can access the School at any time.
  • If you do not receive an email from either Angus or myself within 48 hours, please check your spam folder first and  the the email address of your Paypal account,  then e-mail my Studio to let us know if you did not receive the Welcome E-mail. PLease forward a copy of your Paypal receipt and the name of the Class.

“What Supplies do I need?”

  • Let me just emphasise that you don’t need all the art supplies in the universe to complete your assignments! You can use whatever art tools you have. You will learn new ways of using what you do have, and be able to pinpoint what you may like to add to your creative life in the future without expensive trial and error.
  • A good Art Journal and Liquitex Gesso are the only absolute essentials.
  • A fast computer & high-speed internet service to process & watch the videos will be vital as well as enough technical know-how to navigate the site. If you are regularly able to watch Youtube videos of up to 15 minutes in length w/o interruption you should be just fine. Do please make sure though, since tuition is non-refundable once your password to the class network has been sent.

“What is an ‘Art Journal’ or ‘Visual Journal’?

  • It’s a mix of diary, travel memoir, autobiography, art therapist, visual diary, notebook, scrapbook and sketchbook….plus more… read more here!

“I can’t draw… can I join in?”

Of course! You don’t have to be an artistic genius to get involved.

  • Draw Happy  is a mini-workshop specifically for people who say ” I can’t Draw” – I have an amazing technique to get your creative confidence up and running!
  •  Supplies Me has enough juice for all levels of arty experience with a myriad of drawing and mixed media techniques.
  •  I HEART Drawing takes you further on your journey and I give you my secret techniques on how to draw figures from your imagination!
  •  Joynal is a little bit of magic as we create mermaids, fairies and unicorns!
  • Photo Happy is my Photographic Artist class.

I will be there to hold your hand and give feedback on your work in some classes (see individual Class Descriptions). Yes, there will be some fantastic, creative drawings posted, but with practice you will feel your work is just as wonderful. You have to start somewhere, right? It may as well be now!

“Do I HAVE to show my drawings and artwork?”

  • No, but your creativity, artistic ability and drawing confidence will improve exponentially if you do…I will be encouraging you to share your work with our group. There is no judgement, just support, helpful feedback and encouragement.

“I’m an avid journaler, will there be new things for me to learn?”

  • Of course! Run your hungry mind over the class descriptions to see all the creative snacks, main courses and desserts on the table! Beginners and experienced creatives alike will find a plethora (love that word) of techniques and inspirations to create meaningful, heart-felt pages that will record your joys, gratitude, doubts, fears, wishes, dreams, ideas…whatever you like.

“Can I download the Videos?”

  • No. My videos are great quality and  hosted on a robust and professional service.  You need an internet connection to watch them.
  • They are compatible with all existing technology including ipads and iphones.

  1. Lucy says:

Hi Jane, I would love to take this course. I’m doing I Heart Drawing and I’ve fallen in love with your art and your teaching style! But I haven’t done Supplies Me and I don’t think I’ll have time to complete it before this new course starts. I was thinking about taking Supplies Me after i finish I Heart Drawing. Now I’m just feeling all over the place – so much I want to do but so little time! What should I do?

  2. Lucy says:

Oh Jane, thanks for saying I’m “fairly advanced”, but I don’t think I am at all… I’m quite a beginner, I know very little about drawing and painting, and very little about the different art supplies. I only started learning last September by taking my first art course by Jane DesRosier, which was a birthday present I gave myself.

  3. Bridie Williams says:

    Just try and stop me….

  4. Kaz H says:

Hi Jane, looking forward to Joynal. Will we be using an altered book journal? Love fairy art, both vintage and modern (Linda Ravenscroft). Enjoyed your chat with Tam! Kaz

  5. Tammie says:

testing, it seems the last two comments i left can’t be left here?

  6. Tammie says:

ah, figured it out, my website link went to a certain page, not the home page and your website would not take that.

    this class sounds magically wonderful.
I look forward to hearing more about it:
    how long it will last
the layout of what we will learn
    and the cost
then i can see if i join in.

  7. Heather says:

I’m interested in learning more about Joynal!!! I’m going to be signing up for Supplies Me rather quickly here! :) Enjoy a gorgeous day! ~H♥~

  8. sonia becker says:

would love to delve in this class just signed up for i love drawing this looks really fun!!!

  9. Lynda says:

Jane, when you say pre-requisite do you mean you won’t let someone sign up for the new course if they haven’t done Supplies Me? I have friends who have taken several drawing classes and are interested in the fairy tale/whimsy genre but can’t put Supplies Me on their plate.

    • Hi Lynda,
You have a bit of experience with your favourite art supplies, then you are most welcome to join in to the fun of Joy-nal!
What i am trying to achieve with the pre-requisite is to get everyone ‘up to speed’ with their art supplies, so we can all concentrate on the drawing and other aspects of the class… sometimes when students are struggling with the basics of art supplies, they can get overwhelmed very quickly!

I am working on the detail of the class and will reveal all very soon!

  10. Mieko Wilson says:

  38. Sonya Batten says:

Jane, this sounds really cool! Will you be giving a discount if people sign up for supplies me and the Joynal course at the same time?

  39. Suzanne W says:

    HI Jane & Angus,
Nice to finally meet you both yesterday. Can’t wait to sign up for the fairytail class in April. Can you reserve some of those luscious special red Peerless watercolours for me also? Hope Angus’ knee injury is on the mend. Love the aquamarkers that I bought from you also – just had to race home and play with them. You guys are sooo inspiring!

  40. Hi my darling Jane! I saw your note on FB and already joined, how marvelous!!! Magic times ahead!

  41. Diana says:

Okay so I saw your Bali Retreat… and I am going to find a way to be there come hell or high water! This class looks amazing. I have not taken Supplies Me… but I do have a background in Art… A BFA from Tyler School of Art in Metalsmithing of all things… What I do for my main art now is Lampworking (see my website or facebook page Dizzy Bead for examples…) I have been doing Mixed Media for about a month but I have played and experimented with so many different “Supplies” over the years that I do not think I would be overwhelmed… I do have the I Heart Drawing on my wishlist as well… I just have to say You are AMAZING… and I understand prices… I teach my art as well.. and you have to take into account all the experience and all the classes you have taken in the past…

  42. Lucy says:

Hi Jane, what size book do you recommend? Thanks.

  43. Lucy says:

Hi Jane, what size book do you recommend?

  44. Karen says:

Ah, sounds like fun, hope you reconsider the prerequisite requirement. Can’t justify the time nor cost for two workshops:( thrilled you’ll be at the Flower show tho!

  45. Darling Jane, I only have 1 trip to the city before the workshop. What do we need to get? Do we need fairytale books to alter? Can you give me an idea of anything that I may need to look for and can’t order from you?

  46. sorry, forgot to tell you, I saw your message about supplies next week, but I’m going to Perth on thu-fri this week!
Don’t worry if it’s too early darling.

  47. Gail Smith says:

Hi Jane, I was wondering whether I should do this class or the I heart drawing, as I haven’t done a lot of bodies as yet. I am almost finished Supplies Me and will be by the time this starts what do think would be best for me.

  48. Tammie says:

  57. kat says:

I am with Lizzy. I would love if Joynal had a payment plan as well. I have taken Supplies ME and I <3 drawing but my financial situation has changed dramatically in the last couple of months so it is tough for me to pay that much at once….

    • Hi Kat,
You can join Journal whenever you are ready, there is no rush! It will be open for at least a year I think.
I just don’t have the level of administration that allows for payment plans unfortunately.
I hope you join the fun as soon as you are able, the fairies are very happy with me in the Joynal classroom and will wait for you!
