THE LADYBIRD CHRONICLES INSTALLATION .

The Ladybird Chronicles tells the story of one little ladybird’s quest to find her spot in the world. “ I wrote the story after the frightening experience of being stuck in the Big Blackout that crippled New York in 2003 and examining how I put myself back together after feeling so utterly alone. I then trawled through thousands of my ‘bugject’ images searching for pictures that would help express the story. Some artwork was perfect, others had to be remastered and some had to be created specifically to move the story along.” says Jane Davenport, the artist behind the installation.

The Ladybird Chronicles was unveiled at the Wollongong Botanic Gardens as part of the Arts Festival. As the Garden’s first Artist in Residence, Jane created a large-scale outdoors installation that was quickly invited to tour Australia’s best Botanic Gardens, Zoo’s and Public Art Institutions. Over 450,000 Australians have enjoyed the exhibition in 2004.

“ The Ladybird Chronicles exhibition is a giant storybook that plays with scale and perception. It is suitable for all ages and especially enjoyable for the vision impaired because of it’s grand scale. It is intended to take visitors on an inspirational journey that lifts the spirit. I hope that the size reversal with the insect characters would also lend a new perspective on the environment. My prop-bug-anda can also used to lessen pesticide use and habitat destruction.” says Jane.
