I hope you find this travel Art Journal inspiring… I just loved creating it. L.O.V.E.D.  It’s a Work In Progress…. I am adding anecdotes and bits and pieces to it as they surface from my  handbag and the nether regions of suitcases… I just received the two boxes of books I bought when I was at Insatiables in Port Townsend. Karen has no web presence, so I can’t do anything other than say, if you go anywhere near that area of the world, you must poke your head in the door. The particular whiff of old books is like nectar to me… the mustier the better quite frankly… because amongst that earthy smell is treasure more sparkling than Edwin Cullen’s skin in daylight. (Twilight references are allowed in this post because I was only an hour away from Forkes.)

I had the “Days of Danger” book with me on the trip as I wasn’t really sure how I was going to use it. ( My nickname is Danger - hence the book I selected) . I prepped the pages with gesso before I left. I used it as a sketch book during my travels, and on my flight home, I decided it was going to become my major memory vessel for that Seattle trip.  The same exact thing happened after my trip to Paris/Portugal last year. I think it is a desperate attempt to extend the wonderful adventure just that little bit longer!

All manner of memorabilia was collected up on my adventure and put it in one little bag.  The Polaroids are mainly from Fuji Instax Cameras. {I’ll do a post about them soon!}… My BFF Cynthia had her little POGO printer with her, and gave me quite a few  pics too. These add so much to the book… all the crazy memories they trigger…

i didn’t even try to attempt the keep things in linear order… the book is for me… to trigger memories and that warm rush of heart-felt emotion for the people contained there. The images that appear in the video, that are not in the book yet, are things I will get in there one day! I suppose the video itself is a Travel Journal too….

Featured in the video is my BFF Elisabeth Rene from Leopard Print Tank Top singing a few impromptu tunes on her Uke. Talented right?! and darn ‘tootin cute…

The Double exposure photos and Light Painting images are mainly done by famed Photographic artist and Lomographer and BFF Tracy V. Moore.  ( I just love in the Video when he turns me and says “Did you know that?” about Elisabeths TALENT… and I’m all “oh, yeah, I totally already knew”. I call Elisabeth The Songbird….)

The PLAY retreat is like a mini artists residency, where 45 artist brings their favorite mediums to work on. We started at 8am and ended near midnight most nights…
Fort Worden is an old military base that is located in beautiful Port Townsend, Washington.

So when one number 381 of THE original 1000 was placed in my hands by  Tracy when I was at the Play retreat, I kinda dropped everything i was working on, to make my mark. The originals are RARE ( see the info below) And it was a highlight of my trip.

Let me rephrase that. In that last two week adventure, there were sooooo many highlights, that I have to really re-qualify my statement and say it was a highlight of that HOUR….
From the get- go I felt like I had slipped into a parallel universe. So much happened…constantly!

Now that I am home, and have time to reflect on the crush of experiences, I’m realising it wasn’t the usual ‘horizons broadening’ kind of trip, it was a “wow, I’m SO loved and so IN love with SO many AWESOME people.” I feel so HAPPY. Deeply joyful. I’m Seattle smiling.

About The 1000 Journals Project

The 1000 Journals Project is an ongoing collaborative experiment attempting to follow 1000 journals throughout their travels. The goal is to provide a method for interaction and shared creativity among friends and strangers.

How it Works:
Those who find the journals add something to them. A story, drawing, photograph, anything really. Then they pass the journal along, to a friend or stranger, and the adventure continues.

Picture if you will a  huge, light filled room settled amongst an a turn of the century,decommissioned military base… ok, maybe that last part is not so easy to do without seeing it for yourself…i will move on…. imagine 45 artists laughing, drawing, painting, collaging, singing, chatting and working away all at once and on their own projects from 8am till midnight. That is Play. well was Play. 2012 marked the last one (waaaaaaaaaaaahhh!). But Teesha Moore has other projects cooking, so I wont lament tooooooo much.

I also got to sit with my ‘PortuGALs ‘ -4 of us from Teesha’s Portugal Workshop were together – I was nestled between my little sister from San Francisco and big sis from Canada, Cynthia Fawcett of Cynful Creations.

I also got to meet my internet pal Mindy Lacefield and am coming home with one of her paintings…. so, so beautiful! Its me with a Tinsel hat. I am deeply in love with Mindy. Beyond crush. It’s major.

I felt like I was not getting anything ‘done’ while I was there, because i was having waaaaaay to much fun meeting people and chatting with my besties….singing at the beach…. trying not to faint in delight in the childrens book section of the vintage book store…you know, the usual (!). but at the end of day 3 , we had a little ‘show and tell’ and i had made : 26  (very cute) badges/buttons, a journal from scratch, a small painting on a board, and many, many drawings. It was a very inspiring environment and I will stuff my heart with every memory I gathered.

I made videos as I went of the journal and painting, and i’ll share them later… ! cant wait to share, because I am very, very, very in luuuuurve with the journal…

I am in Seattle now, staying with Teesha and Tracy, and having more fun than is probably legal. Lots of adventures to share soon! I hope you are having as much fun today as I am, but i probably doubt it (kidding!)!.
