Hello! My name is Jane Davenport, but my friends call me Danger.
I live at ‘The Nest’ overlooking the Byron Bay lighthouse in Australia with my husband, Gus, & our two dogs, Moo Tinsel.

I love being a professional artist, online workshop phenomenon, degenerate art supply junky, Art Journal Evangelist and koala mama ( yes! Koalas live in my garden… there’s a magnificent python too, but lets ignore her).

I started my website in 2001. It became my blog in 2009 and it’s now my favourite place to hang out online.  My passion is teaching women how to defy their creative gravity.

I believe in delight and laughter. I believe in happiness and trust. I believe in hard work and abundance. I believe in Sea Shepherd and Rainforest Rescue and donate part of my income to both. I love to be inspired and to inspire ( every noticed how one leads to the other?).

I draw, I paint, I photograph, I art journal,  I write, I film. I empower.

And I share. Oh, how I LOVE to share.

My Story

I am a mixed media artist laden with super-powers. But I started off like this:

and grew into this:

I started in Fashion

My first job out of school was as a fashion Illustrator.
This evolved to a textile designer and then fashion designer.

Working on my ‘Jane Davenport’ Fashion Label was lots of fun.
I created a Collection for my mother, fashion Icon, Liz Davenport.

As well as designing my own label I was the Creative Director for the company.
I moved to London to head the UK expansion and worked from Bond Street in London.

Then I found Photography

Jane Davenport fashion shoot

I started my photographic career in fashion as a runway photographer. It began  in a rather random way. While I was living in London my mother came to visit me. Liz bought so many shoes she couldn’t fit the new camera she bought with her back in her suitcase and left it behind for me to return on a future visit home.  London Fashion Week was about to commence and I really wanted to see if supermodels were as beautiful in the flesh as in the glossies, so I snuck in as a photographer and discovered two things:
1. They are
and 2. I loved photography!
I became a fashion catwalk regular in London and Paris and Liz never got her camera back.

I concentrated on fashion photography until my return to Australia.

The obsession with Ladybirds begins

And then something really weird happened. I have no explanation. I  became fascinated with the little insects of the garden, especially ladybirds. And so I left the glamourous  world of fashion to concentrate on photographing my bugs. I had no choice really… I  was obsessed.

There is something rather spectacular about ladybirds ( ladybugs, ladybeetles). They way they parade around the garden in their gorgeous spots and courageous colour. They have a sweet tooth. They can fly. What’s not to love? Seeing them makes me happy, heck! Just thinking about them makes me smile…. so…cute….

I developed Artomology

walking-on-clouds-jdavenport

My passion for insects lead to me being called the ‘Artomologist‘ as a play on entomology. I won lots of awards and travelled all over the world photographing insects with my artwork exhibited in galleries and large-scale, outdoors art installations.  I specialised in working with zoos internationally. I have had 4 books on bugs.

I have been described as and “one of Australia’s most exciting snappers.” and ”one of Australia’s most successful Licensed Artists”. My artwork has not only appeared in galleries, books, magazines and newspapers but in movies, on chatshows and on homewares, textiles, stationery and giant glass screens. I work with some fantastic companies to make this happen.

See some of my Collections here: click for Portfolio

Photographing insects is not really so different from photographing supermodels as they pose in the latest spring fashion and parade down petal catwalk, but  although I have swapped photographing the human kind of social butterfly and stick insect for the real thing I still can be tempted to do a fashion shoot if it involves an exotic location so I can go and photograph bugs…..

I opened my own Gallery

In 2006 my husband and I moved to Byron Bay and we opened our Gallery in  2007. The Institute of Cute was a highlight for visitors to glamorous Byron. We welcomed glittering celebrities, visiting rockstars from the huge music events, World Champion surfers and visitors from around the world. It was a place to house my Artwork and licensed collections of Homewares, clothing, textiles, posters, stationery and all my ladybird inspired designs. It was a fun and eclectic space!

The Online version of the Institute of Cute opened in 2011 and offered my ladybird inspired treasures, art work, fashion, books and supplies for Artists.

Art Journaling

In 2010 I discovered Art Journaling. It was a game changer for me and stole my heart and gradually absorbed  my creative attention. Creating just  for myself  allowed  my heart and soul to expand exponentially. I stumbled upon the ‘Mixed Media community’… And found my creative home!

Teaching

In 2011 I was asked to teach in 21 Secrets as one of 21 leading Journaling Artists. My class, Draw Happy, was a huge hit and I discovered a passion and talent for sharing a lifetime of creative knowledge.

I went to Portugal to do an art workshop with my idol Teesha Moore. Something totally magic happened on that trip. I can’t put it into words. But I came home a better artist and confident in my new direction. Full of momentum for my epic yoyage, I created my first stand- alone online workshop on my return.

Supplies Me launched in September 2011, and it has been a huge success. I have created ‘I Heart Drawing’ and ‘Joynal’ since then. I LOVE teaching!

Teesha invited me to Seattle to teach at the Artfest Annex in February 2012. Discovering just how vibrant and exciting the alternative art community is, has been so inspiring.

Craft Shows

In 2o11, Angus and I started exhibiting at Craft Shows and Art Expos. ( click here for the calendar) Part of my plan to get everyone in the world to art Journal! I give drawing lessons live on stage and chat away all day about journals and art supplies. I get to draw all day – pinch me!

So with the growing success of the shows and the online store, we decided to hibernate the Byron Bay Gallery. We have plans to open again one day as the shop was lots of fun, so cuuuuute and successful. But I can only do so much!

Artini: the mixed media club

I launched Artini.ning.com, my very own Mixed Media Club- and I have great plans for it! I’ve always wanted my own nightclub… but this is WAY better! You can join here- it’s FREE! http://Artini.ning.com

The Nest

In 2012 Angus and I found the ‘dream house’. Living in  The Nest is another turning point in my personal history. In this amazing space I can hone my Super Powers and create the rest of my life.

More about Jane Davenport:

The photography bug bit Jane

at the foot of Europe’s premier fashion runways, waiting hours to capture a few frames of lightening quick, spindle legged, whip thin beauties.

She started her photography career in fashion in London and Paris. Now Jane captures the show-ponies of the garden as they pose in the latest spring fashion and parade down petal catwalks. “It’s not really so different from photographing supermodels” says Jane who has swapped the human kind of walking stick for the real thing.

As the world’s leading Artomologist (Jane made up that word, so is also the only one, hence her claim is perfectly valid!) her unique mix of art and entomological persuasions has captured an international audience.

So how did the six-legged amongst us wrest Jane away from the glamorous world of international fashion?  “I spent my childhood looking for fairies in the bottom of the garden. I didn’t find any fairies but I did find ladybirds, caterpillars, butterflies and all the other little creatures that make the garden such a magical place. I went through a lot of bug-catchers.” says Jane.

‘Sects appeal bit again quite by chance when Jane was photographing flowers for a textile design. “A ladybird landed on a lily petal and I became totally mesmerised by its beauty. After that I started paying closer attention to the creatures in the garden and started my backyard safaris.” says Jane.

Jane’s backyard has now grown exponentially since then and many a butterfly in Vietnam and beetle in the Arizona desert could tell of posing for this unconventional artist.

Jane has created major international touring installations that have been enjoyed by millions as Artist in Residence at the Wollongong Botanic Gardens, The Hunter Valley Gardens and the Perth Zoo. Her work has featured in over 35 solo exhibitions. She is also author of 4 books and the founder and chief designer for the Institute of Cute.

“My first exhibition was in 2000 and called ‘Follow Your Bliss’ and I have been doing exactly that ever since.” says Jane.

More Information

Jane Davenport finds incredible, saturated beauty, both harmonious and ragged, in ignored spaces.
Her work urges us to connect with nature, but it’s not merely a document of vanishing places. “Personally, I am very concerned about the disappearance of beauty. I feel an urgent need to go and create images after discovering yet another environmental atrocity through the media. Ladybirds and butterflies are not safe from my lens when I am worrying about whaling or clear felling of ancient forests in Tasmania. I simply must go and check that life still goes on, that there is hope. I love photography, because it enables me to placing my wishes and dreams on paper.”
“I can quietly observe an insect for hours on end. I like to imagine its role, its connections. I study the intricate details and way its body fits together. I wonder how or why they evolved and come up with my own solutions.”

“I make images to express wonder, love and hope for the world. In creating my work, I can explore nature, and bring it back to a scale that is digestible to me. I find being able to watch part of the world recover, to stagger forward and find yet another niche, empowering. Beauty is regenerative and it inspires optimism.” says Jane.

Background info:

Jane Davenport started her photographic career as a runway photographer when her mother , Australian fashion icon Liz Davenport , came to visit her in London. Liz bought so many shoes she couldn’t fit her new camera in the suitcase and left it behind for Jane to return on a future visit home. “London Fashion Week was about to commence and I really wanted to see if supermodels were as beautiful in the flesh as in the glossies, so I snuck in as a photographer and discovered two things 1. They are and 2. I loved photography!” says Jane. Jane became a fashion catwalk regular and Liz never got her camera back.

Now Jane captures the show-ponies of the garden as they pose in the latest spring fashion and parade down petal catwalks. “It’s not really so different from photographing supermodels” says Jane who has swapped the human kind of social butterfly for the real thing.

She describes herself as an ‘Artomologist’ finding it the perfect way to define her unique mix of art and entomological persuasions. Jane’s work has featured in over 30 exhibitions and 5 books.

Jane became the Artist in Residence at the Wollongong Botanic Gardens in 2003 and the body of work she created, ‘The Ladybird Chronicles’ , is a 70 meter long giant storybook. It features the plants and little creatures that call our gardens home and the imagery will permanently alter your perception of insects. The installation also tells an inspirational story and explores the very human need belong and is a valuable environmental showcase, putting up a great fight for habitat conservation and the reduced use of pesticides. The national Ladybird Chronicles tour has attracted over 800,000 visitors to Australia’s leading Botanic Gardens, Zoos and Public Art Institutes.

Jane was invited to speak about the success of the Ladybird Chronicles at the Botanic Gardens World Congress in Barcelona and at the Invertebrates in Captivity congress in Arizona, and a World tour was shaped from the interest.  the international tour started at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin Texas. Work then began on expanding the tour to incorporate Botanic Gardens and Zoos across the United States and Europe.

In between the national and international tours Jane completed a residency at the Hunter Valley Gardens, which resulted in the large-scale, outdoors installation and book, ‘Ladybird, ladybird’ .

Jane has collaborated with the Perth Zoo on three very successful installations, What’s the Buzz?, Frogology and Blink.

Jane Davenport is also the founder of the “Institute of Cute” Concept Store in Byron Bay, Australia. Byron Bay is one of Australia’s most desired relaxation destinations as the small town is surrounded by forest, divine beaches and a crystal sea full of dolphins and whales. The whole Byron region is regarded as a creative and health mecca and ‘The Bay’ is its epi-centre.

Jane has also been the Horticultural Media Association’s Young Achiever and the recipient of the Joy Harland Memorial Photography Award as well as being awarded a ‘Guru’ by the IAPP and scholarship at the renowned Sante Fe Workshops. Her education spans across Australia to London,  Paris and New York. She is an avid believer in continuing education and has attended over 75  professional development workshops, classes and courses since leaving school.

” I create my work to call to the gentler aspects of my own personality, to slow my pace, to observe and conserve. Lately I have folded the wider world into my work (but I still love ladybirds best, best, best!).”

I had to invent a word to adequately describe the specific and unique character of my work.  I practice Artomology and describe myself as an Artomologist.  I love bugs, photograph them and write books about them, but I am not an entomologist.  I highly recommend inventing your own profession as being the only one of something, you are also the best in the world at that thing!” says Jane

Animals and evolution have always intrigued Jane and fueled an innocent and child-like curiosity.  Jane adds her compulsive love of nature to her skill with colour and technique in so many mediums, energises it all with a vivid imagination.
