BLINK: and you'll miss it™ GALLERY
Nature holds endless delights for the curious.
Artists Statement:
"Endemism and extinction seem to go hand in hand.
When an creature has spent eons becoming increasingly specialised and perfectly suited to its surrounds,
it just can’t seem to cope with the fast changes the last few centuries have inflicted.
Australia’s South West has one of the highest rates of endemism in the world -
the bulk of organisms occur here and nowhere else. And what bulk! The South West is a biodiversity hotspot,
it is teeming with variety and uniqueness. It has also tragically been rated an exctinction hotspot.
Put simply, WA has more to lose than just about any other region in the world.
Don’t you find that sad? Alarming?
Historical and current unfettered land-clearing, salinity, feral species and
chemical use have degraded habitat and pushed many of the animals you meet in this exhibition to the edge of extinction.
It is hard not to be overwhelmed by the terrifying fear that one day, and the continued rate of destruction,
they will all be gone - in the relative blink of an eye.
I must often remind myself that there is hope, that there are people that care passionately
and are working hard to make sure that Numbats and Swampy’s don’t disappear forever.
I hope you enjoy the stars of ‘Blink’ and are motivated to do your part in ensuring they are not missed."
