Artomology photo tips for close up and macro photography by Jane Davenport

customised camera strapsGet rid of that ugly camera strap that your camera came with. Especially the type that have your cameras brand on it! They may say “Canon/Nikon/etc Digital Camera” but they also shout “oooh, look, person with expensive, new camera. Come steal me”.
I have tried the techno, load bearing neoprene-type straps, but the tend to bounce around and I found them more annoying than shoulder saving.

A few years ago, I saw a young lady with a GORGEOUS camera strap. My antennae went wild! She directed me to Etsy.. and a search later, I had my own customised camera straps being made and sent from the USA. Ladybirds on one (of course), and red with white polka dots on the other – with a ribbon corsage! I got mine from shabby straps.

Go to Etsy here and search for ‘Camera Strap dslr’. Or you can opt for a padded strap cover. I noticed at Sewtamz you can have your initials embroidered on the straps. You can also get a strap for your point-and-shoot camera. Lots of delectable delights!

The added bonus of this splash of individuality, is that your camera is very easily recognisable, and less likely to disappear in a crowded situation. Have fun!

Ooohh, these look fantastic! I am very excited because I have just acquired my brothers old Canon (with the ugly strap) and have been using it turned inside out! These straps will be perfect.
I’m sorry to miss you at the Garden Show this year Jane – your stand looked absolutely amazing. I have been so busy with work deadlines that there was now way I was able to make it :(
But now that I have my own DSLR (my first one!) I will have to go back through your posts and learn a thing or two about how to use it!

    Hi Jane!
Just thought I’d write you a message! I was at the Sydney Royal Easter Show with my Mum yesterday (I actually just found your Facebook page for the Institute of Cute) and I met your husband. I can’t express the pure excitement I felt when I saw your stall and even more so – your truly amazing photography!
I am a huge and an avid lover of ladybirds and photography and when they are both put together – wow :) I love your work and instantly had to buy your Ladybird, Ladybird book! So gorgeous and so inspirational! It would be a dream to photograph like you! Last year I finally got my Canon DSLR (500D) and have been experimenting like crazy when I have the chance!! Love nature photography and have always had a fixation of photogrpahy insects….the ones I tend to come across mainly are bees though! Haven’t captured my own ladybird shot as yet!! I did a beginner course at TAFE last year for digital photography and learnt bits and pieces. Would be a dream to do one of your workshops which would be focused on the type of photography I love! I’m actually a primary school teacher but have always had a love of photography and been doing it on the side and as a hobby….would love to enter the profession one day but it’s not easy to get into is it….how did yoiu start off? Did you do a course?
Also I heard from somewhere about “a ladybird shop in Byron Bay’ and have always wondered about it! Now I know :) I wished I’d known about you and your shop earlier! You are a huge inspiration Jane! If you ever get the chance I put the link for my photography work on here….it’s just a selection of photos I think are my best ones! It’s a Facebook group called: Rachel Jayne Photography! Would love you feedback.
P.S. I must order one of these beautiful straps!! Exactly what I’ve been dreaming of!! It’s exciting when things in your mind are reality :)
